The day I arrived in Rishikesh, my beloved grandmother passed away. I was at the right place at the right time it seemed, close to the place she considered holy, the Ganges river. Applying my natural artistic skill, I made a flower offering with a small ceremony. A friend accompanied me through these challenging times. Thank you ‘Adji’ for your love, lessons and example.

While Yoga practice was my main focus of my journey, I also made quite a few friends and met fellow Yoga practioners to spend time with. A chance  encounter at ‘The Beatles Ashram‘ with this Yoga teacher, provided me  one of the best pictures of my trip. The Beatles Ashram looked like a abandoned utopian village resembling a theme park. A portal to another time when Eastern spirituality was just becoming hippy and cool. Hastely built and never completed, then quickly abandoned after The Beatles were done with their ‘spiritual journey’.

Me pretend-meditating

When I arrived in India I had no fleshed out plan of what to do and where to go. So many options and aspects to explore, overwhelming. A friend I stayed with urged me to attend a 10 day silence retreat at this ashram located about 80 km outside Delhi. I was hestitant but considering my anxious state I was relieved to have a starting point. It turned out to be one of the most transformative experiences of my Life. Acceptance of discomfort makes you innately comfortable. The picture is of the main building containing the meditation chambers. In hindsight I consider this place the holiest of Holy.
